Troubleshooting

Fixes for common problems with outputs, the output server, media, sign-in and more.

Start here when something doesn’t work. If your problem isn’t listed, ask in the Discord community or report a bug.

Work through these in order:

  1. Is a project open in Kinetra? The output server only runs while a project is open.
  2. Is the server running? The top of Kinetra’s window should show an address like 127.0.0.1:7770. If it says Port 7770 is in use or Server couldn’t start, see Port is in use.
  3. Is the URL complete? It must end in /screen/ and the screen’s ID. Copy it again from Screens.
  4. Is anything on air? The page is transparent when nothing is on air. Take a layer in Control.
  5. Is the connection working? Add ?debug to the end of the URL in OBS or vMix. A badge shows connected, connecting, reconnecting or unknown screen.
    • unknown screen: the screen was deleted, or another project is open.
    • connecting for a long time: check the address and port.
  6. In OBS, check that the browser source is above your video in the source list, and its size matches the screen’s resolution.
  7. On another computer, see Outputs from another computer don’t load.

Another program, or another copy of Kinetra, uses the port. Kinetra doesn’t switch ports by itself.

  1. Close the other program if you can, or
  2. Open Preferences › Network & API › Server and choose another Port, such as 7780.
  3. Update the URLs in OBS or vMix to the new port.

Kinetra Canary uses port 7771 by default, so it can run next to Kinetra.

Outputs from another computer don’t load

Section titled “Outputs from another computer don’t load”
  1. Turn on Preferences › Network & API › Server › Allow access from other devices on the network.
  2. Use the address under On your network, not 127.0.0.1.
  3. If Windows asked about the firewall, allow Kinetra on private networks. If you missed the question, allow Kinetra in Windows Security › Firewall & network protection › Allow an app through firewall.
  4. Check that both computers are on the same network.
  • Animations don’t play, graphics just appear: make sure your templates don’t use prefers-reduced-motion. See Template format.
  • Wrong font: templates can only use Kinetra’s fonts.
  • Graphic is too small or cut off: set the browser source’s width and height to the screen’s resolution.

The out-animation is still playing; it ends after at most 3 seconds. To remove everything at once, use Panic (Shift+Esc in Control).

  • The layer shows Changes on next take: Live edit is on On take. Click Take again. See Control.
  • Studio mode is on: changes go to Preview. Click TAKE. See Studio mode.

A flow or automation is running. Turn on Automation off in the Control toolbar to stop everything automatic. Cues and hotkeys still work. See Automation.

Video doesn’t play, or plays without sound

Select the file in Sources › Media and read its playback warnings. Most problems are codecs: convert the file to H.264 MP4 with the Convert… command. See Will it play?.

If a file in the project can’t be read, Kinetra says … was damaged and has been reset to defaults, and keeps the damaged copy next to it. Restore a snapshot from Preferences › Advanced › Backups to get your work back.

I can’t find Flows, MIDI, OSC or the HTML and CSS tabs

Section titled “I can’t find Flows, MIDI, OSC or the HTML and CSS tabs”

They’re hidden in Simple mode. Switch to Advanced in Preferences › General › Mode.

See Accounts and plans. The most common fixes:

  • Check your internet connection, then click Check now in Preferences › License.
  • Set your computer’s date and time automatically.

Graphics are still on air, or display outputs are showing. Closing Kinetra takes them off. Click Cancel to keep the show going, or Exit.

You can’t install an update while graphics are on air or a display output is showing. Clear everything, turn the outputs off, and click Install and restart again.

Some features don’t work on a Mac yet, such as display outputs and MIDI input. See Kinetra on macOS.

On a new install, see Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper.

Kinetra writes a log file, kinetra.log. Open Preferences › About and click Open log folder. Include the log when you report a bug.
