Studio mode

Prepare graphics in Preview and send them to Program when ready.

In Studio mode, every change goes to Preview first. When the Preview looks right, you Take it to Program (on air) with a transition. It works like the Studio Mode in OBS or Preview/Program on a vision mixer.

  1. Open Control.
  2. Turn on Studio mode in the toolbar.
  3. Switch the view to Single to see Preview and Program side by side.

Studio mode is saved with the project.

  1. In the Layers panel, click Cue in on a layer to put it in Preview. Cue out takes it out of Preview.
  2. Change fields, looks or positions. Every edit goes to Preview. The Preview shows how many changes it has.
  3. Click TAKE, or press Space or Enter. Preview goes to Program with the chosen transition.

Each layer shows two tallies: PGM (on air or not) and PVW (in Preview or not).

You can also take with Take preview in the Layers panel header, or with Show › Take in the menu.

Choose the transition between Preview and Program:

  • Cut: instant.
  • Crossfade: fades from the old Program to the new one. Set Crossfade duration from 100 to 5000 ms (default 500 ms).
  • Play out & in: plays the out-animations of the old graphics and the in-animations of the new ones.

The transition you pick is used by TAKE, Space/Enter, the command palette and flows.

Drag the T-bar up to take by hand. Release it at the top to finish the take. Let go anywhere else and Program stays as it was.

With the keyboard: arrow keys move it 5 %, Page Up/Page Down move it 25 %, and Esc cancels.

Click the settings button next to the Studio mode switch:

  • Preview after take: Keep (Preview shows the new Program) or Clear (Preview starts empty).
  • Default transition and Crossfade duration.

Automation keeps working on Program while you prepare the Preview: timers, data sources stepping by themselves, schedules and flows. When that changes a layer you’ve cued, the layer shows Program changed since cue.

Media buttons (Play, Pause, Stop) always act on Program.

If the Preview has changes when you turn Studio mode off, Kinetra asks what to do:

  • Take: send the Preview to air first.
  • Keep for next take: on-air edits wait for the next take; the rest apply now.
  • Discard: Program stays as it is and the Preview is lost.
  • Cancel: stay in Studio mode.

Each screen also has a Preview URL. Add /preview to the screen’s URL:

http://127.0.0.1:7770/screen/<screen id>/preview

Use it, for example, as a multiview source so the director can see what’s next.

  • In Studio mode, layer hotkeys cue layers in and out of Preview instead of taking them.
  • Show › Clear is disabled in Studio mode: cue layers out in Preview and take instead.
  • PANIC still cuts everything at once and clears every Preview.

Switch the Control view to Single. The Grid view shows a Preview pending mark on screens with changes instead.

Space and Enter don’t take while you’re typing in a field or have a button selected. Click an empty part of the page first, or use the TAKE button.
