Interface tour

A walk through Kinetra's window, sidebar, Control page and preview.

This page shows you around Kinetra’s main window, so you know where to find things.

Everything for a show lives in a project: a normal folder on your computer with your screens, templates, sources and media. You can copy it, back it up, or put it in git.

When no project is open, Kinetra shows the project picker: New project, Open project and your Recent projects. The Cloud card is marked Coming soon.

To switch projects, click the project name at the top of the window.

From left to right:

  • Kinetra logo: goes to the Dashboard. Canary builds show a yellow Canary badge here.
  • Project switcher: the open project, recent projects, New project…, Open… and Close project.
  • Output server: the address OBS and vMix connect to, such as 127.0.0.1:7770, with a button to copy it. If something is wrong, it says so here, for example Port 7770 is in use.
  • Automation off: an amber pill that shows only while automation is switched off (see Automation).
  • Theme: switches between light and dark.
Item Shortcut What it’s for
Dashboard Ctrl+1 Overview of the project: screens, recent templates, output server.
Templates Ctrl+2 Your graphics. See Templates and styles.
Sources Ctrl+3 Data (tables, schedules, links) and media. See Data sources and Media.
Screens Ctrl+4 Canvases that OBS or vMix show, and the layout editor.
Flows Ctrl+5 Automation. Advanced mode only. See Automation.
Polls Ctrl+6 Audience polls. See Live polls.
Control Ctrl+7 Where you run the show. See Control.
Preferences Ctrl+, Opens the Preferences window. See Preferences.

The sidebar shows icons only until you rest the pointer on it. Click the pin at the bottom (or press Ctrl+B) to keep it open.

On a Mac, use Cmd where these docs say Ctrl.

New installs start in Simple mode, which hides Flows, template code (HTML and CSS), MIDI, OSC and API sources. Switch in Preferences › General › Mode or the View menu. Hidden features keep working in your projects; they’re only out of sight.

A screen is one canvas, for example 1920×1080 with a transparent background. Each screen has its own URL, which you add to OBS or vMix as a browser source.

A screen holds layers. Each layer shows one template (or a media file) with its own content. Layers higher in the list are in front.

Open a screen from Screens to get the layout editor: the Layers list on the left, the canvas in the middle and the Inspector on the right, where you set the layer’s template, look, position, fields and variables.

Control is the page you run the show from.

  • Toolbar: view options, Studio mode, Live edit, Clear screen (the selected screen), Automation off and the red Panic button.
  • Screens: live previews of your screens, in a Grid or one at a time in Single view. A red line means something on that screen is on air.
  • Side panel for the selected screen:
    • Layers, each with Take and Clear and its fields;
    • Sources used on the screen, with previous/next;
    • Cues: buttons that run several steps at once;
    • Automation: things that run on their own.

Tally dots show what’s on air: red is On air, green is in Preview (Studio mode).

Press Ctrl+K to open the command palette. Type to find any command, screen, template or setting, and press Enter to run it. Start with @ to search screens, # for templates and / for settings.

Dangerous commands, such as Panic, need a second Enter in the palette.

  • File: projects, import and export of settings, Preferences.
  • Edit: undo, redo, copy and paste.
  • View: Simple or Advanced mode, the sidebar, zoom and full screen.
  • Show: Take, Clear, Clear all (every screen), Panic and Go (your cues).
  • Output: display outputs.
  • Help: Documentation (opens docs.kinetra.live), keyboard shortcuts, updates and About.

Preferences open in their own window. Some settings belong to your computer (theme, shortcuts, display outputs). Others are saved with the open project (port, style and brand, OSC). See Preferences.
