Install

Download Kinetra and install it on Windows or macOS.

Kinetra is free to download and use. It runs on Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and macOS 11 or later (Apple silicon and Intel). You need a free Kinetra account to start it the first time.

Go to kinetra.live/download and download the installer for your computer:

  • Windows: Kinetra_<version>_x64-setup.exe
  • macOS: Kinetra_<version>_universal.dmg

The download page also shows each file’s SHA-256 checksum, so you can check that the file arrived intact.

  1. Open the downloaded …-setup.exe.
  2. If Windows shows Windows protected your PC, see Windows SmartScreen below.
  3. Follow the installer, then start Kinetra from the Start menu.

Early builds of Kinetra may not be code-signed yet. Windows then warns you the first time you open the installer.

  1. In the Windows protected your PC box, click More info.
  2. Check that the file name is the Kinetra installer you downloaded.
  3. Click Run anyway.

Only do this for a file you downloaded from kinetra.live/download. To check the file first, open PowerShell in your Downloads folder and compare the result with the checksum on the download page:

Terminal window
Get-FileHash .\Kinetra*.exe
  1. Open the downloaded .dmg.
  2. Drag Kinetra into the Applications folder.
  3. Open Kinetra from Applications.
  4. If macOS says Kinetra can’t be opened, see macOS Gatekeeper below.

Early builds of Kinetra may not be signed and notarized yet. macOS then blocks the app the first time you open it.

  1. Click Done (or OK) in the warning.
  2. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down to the message about Kinetra and click Open Anyway.
  4. Confirm with your password or Touch ID, then click Open.

You only need to do this once. To check the file first, run this in Terminal and compare the result with the checksum on the download page:

Terminal window
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Kinetra*.dmg

The first time Kinetra starts, it shows Welcome to Kinetra. Kinetra is free, but it needs one sign-in on each computer to set up your free license.

  1. Click Sign in to get your free license.
  2. Your browser opens the Kinetra account site. Sign in, or create an account if you don’t have one.
  3. Check that the browser shows the same code as Kinetra, then approve the sign-in.
  4. Kinetra continues by itself.

Have a license key? Click I have a license key instead, type the key and click Sign in and add key. The key is added to your account when you sign in. You can also add a key later in Preferences › License › License key.

After this, Kinetra starts without signing in, also offline. See Accounts and plans.

Kinetra doesn’t update by itself. To check for a new version, choose Help › Check for updates…. If one is available, read the notes and click Install and restart.

You can’t install an update while graphics are on air or a display output is showing. Take everything off air first.

The download page also offers Canary builds: a preview of the next version, built every night. Canary installs as a separate app, Kinetra Canary, next to the normal one, with its own settings and sign-in. It shows a yellow Canary badge. Use it to try new features, not for your show.

  • Windows: open Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Kinetra and choose Uninstall.
  • macOS: drag Kinetra from Applications to the Trash.

Your projects are normal folders and stay where they are.

See Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper above.

The first sign-in needs an internet connection. Check the connection and try again.

Click Open the browser again in Kinetra.

You have a few minutes to approve the sign-in. Click Try again to get a new code.

Put your first graphic on air.
